Croswell plans summer theater classes for all ages
The Croswell Opera House in Adrian is planning several weeklong classes in July and August for people who would like to learn about all aspects of theater production.
Most of the classes will be open to adults as well as youth. Most will have two sessions to accommodate different age groups.
The following classes will be offered.
Makeup and Hair for the Stage (July 9-13): Taught by theatrical hair and makeup designer Suzette Collins, this class will cover the fundamentals of stage makeup, including aging, bruising, and skin effects, and period hair styling. All students will go home with a basic stage makeup kit to practice with. There will be one session for ages 6-12 and one session for ages 13 and up.
Auditioning for Stage and Screen (July 16-20): Ryan Tymensky, from New York and Los Angeles-based casting agency Telsey + Company, will teach students how to succeed in auditions for theater, film and television. Students in the afternoon session will create a video audition for their future use. There will be one session for ages 6-12 and one session for ages 13 and up.
Circus Arts and Acrobatics (July 23-27): This class will cover topics like juggling, ball walking, and more. There will be one session for ages 6-12 and one session for ages 13 and up.
Stage Combat (July 23-27): Taught by Siena Heights University professor Mark DiPietro, who trained with the Society of American Fight Directors, this class will cover staging techniques such as hand-to-hand combat, sword spins, and footwork. This class will only be offered for ages 13 and up.
Performance (July 30 to August 3): Students will develop a cabaret-style performance over the course of a week, learning songs, short monologues, and choreography. Older students will learn more advanced performance skills such as harmonizing, addressing the audience, and vocal technique. The instructor is Betsy Lackey. There will be one session for ages 6-10 and one for ages 11-15.
Songwriting for Musical Theater (August 6-10): Composer and songwriter Betsy Lackey will teach students how to develop concepts, craft vivid lyrics, build verses and choruses, and turn their ideas into music. Space is very limited. This class will only be offered for ages 13 and up.
Tuition ranges from $125 to $200, depending on the class, and discounts are available for those registering for multiple classes.
