 ‘Chitty Chitty Bang Bang’ lands at the Croswell

The Croswell Opera House in Adrian will kick off its summer season with the musical “Chitty Chitty Bang Bang,” which opens June 10 and runs for three weekends.

“It’s a great family story full of imagination,” director Julianne Dolan said. The show is based on the children’s book by Ian Fleming and the 1968 movie musical of the same name.

Comedy classic "A Funny Thing Happened....' comes to the Croswell

Comedy classic

Area theater audiences will get the chance to see a comedy classic this month when the Croswell Opera House in Adrian stages “A Funny Thing Happened on the Way to the Forum.”

The musical features a score by Stephen Sondheim and a script by Burt Shevelove and Larry Gelbart, who was one of the creators of “M*A*S*H.” The Croswell’s production opens Friday.

The Croswell Opera House in Adrian is planning several weeklong classes in July and August for people who would like to learn about all aspects of theater production.

Most of the classes will be open to adults as well as youth. Most will have two sessions to accommodate different age groups.

The Croswell Opera House in Adrian will celebrate two milestones this weekend with a concert performance of the musical “West Side Story.”

This year marks the 100th birthday of composer Leonard Bernstein, who wrote the score for the classic musical.

It’s also the 50th anniversary of the Croswell’s rebirth as a live theater. In the late 1960s, the historic building was in danger of demolition. After it was saved from the wrecking ball, the first show produced on its stage with local talent was an Adrian High School production of “West Side Story” in the spring of 1968.

They explored the themes of Hamilton and the many ways that “Rise Up!” can be interpreted.

Magazine names Adrian College 'Top College' and 'Best Value'

ADRIAN — Adrian College jumped up four spaces this year on the U.S. News and World Report’s annual ranking of top regional colleges in the nation.

In its 2016 edition of “America’s Best Colleges,” U.S. News has again ranked Adrian College as a “regional top college in the Midwest.” The college is listed 15th in the Midwest region in its “Best Regional Colleges” section, up from 19th a year ago, according to a news release.

What was previously known as the Lenawee County Conference & Visitors Bureau will now be called Visit Lenawee, with the organization also implementing a new logo design and long-term vision.

Oldest theater in Michigan to reopen after yearlong renovation

The Croswell Opera House in downtown Adrian is reopening its doors after undergoing extensive renovations for the past year.

The Croswell, named for a former governor of Michigan who helped build the theater, first opened in 1866. The League of Historic American Theatres lists it as the oldest in the state. It has been in continuous operation for 151 years.
